Laura J. McIntosh

As a child, I loved hanging out in my father’s workshop.  I enjoyed being given pieces of wood to carve and learning how to identify wood types from their grain.  Presently, my studio is filled with a variety of hardwoods as well as objects I’ve found during hikes on my woodland property.  Shards of pottery, bones, fossils, discarded pieces of metal, and several donated (and drained) Ostrich eggs fill many shelves.

My artwork has a restorative nature. Previously thrown out metal pieces have been repurposed, sealed, and paired with contrasting organic backgrounds.  Although I do not confine myself to a “signature style,” per se, I am attracted to reinventing materials that were rejected and creating a new context for them.
The abstract pieces I create, honor the notion that one person’s trash is another’s treasure.

I grew up in Bloomington and studied art history and printmaking at Indiana University. My Fine Arts degree was completed at the University of New Mexico.  I’ve exhibited in galleries in New Mexico and Bloomington, Indiana where I’m an active member of the arts community.
